- One reading is not a diagnosis. A1C moves with the whole of the previous three months rather than anything you did today — the one thing it does not move with is the meal before the test. A clinician reads it against your history and usually against a repeat, not on its own.
- Reference ranges differ between laboratories. The bands above follow the ADA Standards of Care thresholds. Your own report prints the range its analyser was calibrated against, and that printed range is the one to compare against — a difference of a few units between labs is normal and does not mean either is wrong.
- A1C is an average over roughly three months, weighted towards the recent weeks. About half of the result comes from the last 30 days, so a change made a fortnight ago is already partly in this number — and a single good or bad week is not.
- Several common conditions make A1C read wrong in a way no repeat test fixes. Anything that shortens red-cell lifespan pushes it down: iron deficiency being treated, haemolytic anaemia, recent blood loss or transfusion, pregnancy, chronic kidney or liver disease. Sickle cell trait and other haemoglobin variants can throw the assay off in either direction depending on the method used. In any of those, fasting glucose or a glucose tolerance test is the more reliable route, and this is the single most common reason an A1C and a home meter appear to disagree.
- An estimated average glucose of 197 mg/dL does not mean your meter should read 197. It is the mean of every value across the whole period, including the overnight hours when most people run lowest. A meter checked mostly before meals will read below it; one checked mostly after meals will read above.

A single figure is a snapshot. What a clinician does with it is set by what sits around it — the other results on the same report, what the person is being treated for, what they were doing in the hours before the sample, and what the previous result was. Two people can hand over the same number and leave with different advice, and neither has been given the wrong answer.
That is also why the bands on this page are drawn from a named guideline rather than from a rounded rule of thumb. A threshold is a decision point somebody argued for in print, not a law of nature, and knowing which document a line comes from is what lets you tell a meaningful result from a borderline one.
