- One reading is not a diagnosis. Absolute lymphocyte count moves with viral infection, steroids, stress, and any recent illness. A clinician reads it against your history and usually against a repeat, not on its own.

- A transient drop after a viral illness is the commonest reason for a low count, and it usually recovers within weeks. Steroids drop it sharply within hours. A persistently low count over months is the one that gets investigated.
- A persistently raised lymphocyte count in an older adult is the usual route to a chronic lymphocytic leukaemia diagnosis, and it is frequently found by accident on a routine blood count in someone with no symptoms. In children and young adults, viral infection explains almost all of it.
