  • One reading is not a diagnosis. Blood sugar moves with the last meal, the hour of day, illness, stress, exercise and medication — which is why the band it falls in depends on when it was taken. A clinician reads it against your history and usually against a repeat, not on its own.
  • Reference ranges differ between laboratories. The bands above follow the ADA Standards of Care thresholds. Your own report prints the range its analyser was calibrated against, and that printed range is the one to compare against — a difference of a few units between labs is normal and does not mean either is wrong.
  • There is no diagnostic category for a one-hour post-meal reading in non-pregnant adults. The bands above mix two different things: what people without diabetes typically peak at, and the under-180 post-meal figure ADA sets as a treatment target for people already diagnosed. Neither is a diagnosis. Pregnancy is the exception — gestational diabetes screening does use a one-hour threshold, and it is a different number again.
