- One reading is not a diagnosis. Blood sugar moves with the last meal, the hour of day, illness, stress, exercise and medication — which is why the band it falls in depends on when it was taken. A clinician reads it against your history and usually against a repeat, not on its own.
- Reference ranges differ between laboratories. The bands above follow the ADA Standards of Care thresholds. Your own report prints the range its analyser was calibrated against, and that printed range is the one to compare against — a difference of a few units between labs is normal and does not mean either is wrong.
- Fasting means at least eight hours without food or drink other than water. Coffee with milk, a mint, or a late snack the night before moves this number, and a reading taken after any of those is not a fasting reading — it belongs in the "no set time" band instead, where the thresholds are quite different.
- A meter is not a laboratory. Home glucose meters are permitted a margin of ±15% against a lab reference under ISO 15197, so a meter reading of 86 mg/dL is consistent with a lab value roughly between 73 and 99. Diagnosis is made on venous laboratory plasma glucose, never on a finger-stick.
