- One reading is not a diagnosis. Creatinine moves with muscle mass, hydration, recent meat intake and some medicines, as well as kidney function itself. A clinician reads it against your history and usually against a repeat, not on its own.

- Several ordinary things raise it without the kidneys changing. A large cooked-meat meal the evening before, creatine supplements, intense exercise in the previous day, and dehydration all push it up. So do some drugs — trimethoprim and cimetidine among them — which block creatinine's secretion into urine without affecting filtration at all.
