- One reading is not a diagnosis. Haemoglobin moves with hydration, altitude, smoking, pregnancy and iron status. A clinician reads it against your history and usually against a repeat, not on its own.
- Reference ranges differ between laboratories. The bands above follow the WHO anaemia thresholds and common adult reference ranges. Your own report prints the range its analyser was calibrated against, and that printed range is the one to compare against — a difference of a few units between labs is normal and does not mean either is wrong.
- Anaemia is a finding, not a diagnosis — the question it opens is why. Iron deficiency is the most common answer worldwide, but B12 or folate deficiency, chronic disease, kidney disease, thalassaemia trait and blood loss all produce it, and the mean cell volume on the same report is the first clue to which. A low haemoglobin without a cause found is an unfinished investigation.
- Living at altitude raises the reference range. WHO adjusts anaemia thresholds upward above about 1,000 metres, because thinner air drives more red cell production. Smoking does the same. Both mean a "normal" result can still be low for that person.
