- One reading is not a diagnosis. Magnesium moves with kidney handling, diarrhoea, alcohol, diuretics and proton pump inhibitors taken long term. A clinician reads it against your history and usually against a repeat, not on its own.

- Less than 1% of the body's magnesium is in blood, so a normal serum level does not rule out depletion of the stores in bone and muscle. This is the main limitation of the test, and it is why magnesium is sometimes replaced on clinical grounds despite a normal result.
- A low magnesium makes low potassium and low calcium refractory. Potassium will not correct while magnesium is low, no matter how much is given, because the kidney keeps wasting it. Checking magnesium is a standard step when potassium refuses to come up.
- Proton pump inhibitors taken for months to years are a recognised cause, as are loop and thiazide diuretics, and chronic alcohol use.
