Your own report prints the range its analyser was calibrated against, and that printed range is the one to compare against — a difference of a few units between labs is normal and does not mean either is wrong.
- Total protein is albumin plus globulin, and the split matters more than the total. Albumin is made by the liver; globulin is mostly antibodies. A normal total can hide a low albumin balanced by a high globulin — which is a very different situation from both being normal. The albumin-to-globulin ratio on the same report is what exposes it.
- A high total protein is unusual and worth following up. Dehydration explains some of it, but a persistently raised globulin fraction is one of the routes to a myeloma diagnosis, and serum protein electrophoresis is the test that follows.
