Notes

  • One reading is not a diagnosis. BMI moves with nothing but height and weight — which is exactly its limitation. A clinician reads it against your history and usually against a repeat, not on its own.
  • Reference ranges differ between laboratories. The bands above follow the WHO BMI categories. Your own report prints the range its analyser was calibrated against, and that printed range is the one to compare against — a difference of a few units between labs is normal and does not mean either is wrong.
  • BMI 21 at 5′7″ is 134 lb. The formula is 703 × pounds ÷ inches², and that is the whole of it — BMI knows your height and your weight and nothing else.
  • It cannot tell muscle from fat, and that is not a small caveat. A trained athlete and a sedentary person of the same height and weight return the same BMI and are in very different health. The measure was devised in the 1830s to describe populations, not to assess individuals, and its author said as much.
  • Where the weight sits matters more than how much there is. Waist circumference, and waist-to-height ratio — keeping your waist under half your height is the usual rule — track cardiometabolic risk better than BMI does, because abdominal fat is the fraction that carries the risk.
  • The cut-offs are not universal. WHO and several national bodies use lower thresholds for people of South and East Asian ancestry, where the risk of type 2 diabetes rises at a lower BMI: overweight from about 23 and obesity from about 27.5 rather than 25 and 30.

Reading it next to the rest of the panel

Almost no blood test answers a question on its own. Each one narrows the field, and what narrows it further is the value sitting beside it on the same report — which is why a printout with one figure circled is harder to interpret than the whole page.

The bands here come from a named source rather than a rounded rule of thumb. A threshold is a decision point somebody argued for in print, and knowing which document a line comes from is what separates a meaningful result from a borderline one.
