- One reading is not a diagnosis. Oxygen saturation moves with how cold the hand is, how still it is, altitude, and the device itself. A clinician reads it against your history and usually against a repeat, not on its own.
- Reference ranges differ between laboratories. The bands above follow the ranges used in routine clinical practice. Your own report prints the range its analyser was calibrated against, and that printed range is the one to compare against — a difference of a few units between labs is normal and does not mean either is wrong.
- A finger pulse oximeter is accurate to about ±2%, so a displayed 97% is consistent with a true saturation roughly between 95% and 99%. Cold hands, poor circulation, nail varnish, gel nails, a moving finger and bright overhead light all push readings around, usually downward. Warm the hand, rest it still on a table, and wait for the trace to steady before reading.
- Accuracy is worse on darker skin, and it errs in the risky direction. Large hospital series have found pulse oximeters more likely to overestimate saturation in patients with darker skin — meaning a reading can look acceptable while the true value is lower. It is a reason to weigh symptoms more heavily, not to distrust the device entirely.
