Notes

  • A resting heart rate of 102 bpm is outside the range a web page should be the end of. Repeat the measurement, and contact a doctor rather than reading further. If it comes with chest pain, breathlessness, confusion, weakness or a change in vision, treat it as an emergency.
  • Reference ranges differ between laboratories. The bands above follow the AHA adult range and PALS paediatric ranges. Your own report prints the range its analyser was calibrated against, and that printed range is the one to compare against — a difference of a few units between labs is normal and does not mean either is wrong.
  • Resting means genuinely at rest. Sitting quietly for five minutes first, not just sitting down. Standing up adds roughly 10–15 bpm, a full bladder adds a few, and caffeine, nicotine, a recent meal, pain, anxiety, dehydration and a warm room each move it. The most representative reading is the one taken in bed before getting up.
  • A low rate is not automatically a problem, and not automatically fitness either. Trained endurance athletes often rest in the 40s and are entirely well. So do some people on beta blockers, rate-limiting calcium channel blockers, or with an underactive thyroid or a conduction problem. What separates them is symptoms: dizziness, fainting, breathlessness or fatigue alongside a slow rate is the part that needs looking at.
  • Rate and rhythm are different questions. A pulse can sit inside the normal range and still be irregular, and an irregular pulse is the finding that atrial fibrillation screening looks for. If beats feel skipped or the interval is uneven, that is worth reporting even when the number itself looks fine.

Reading it next to the rest of the picture

A single figure is a snapshot. What a clinician does with it is set by what sits around it — the other results on the same report, what the person is being treated for, what they were doing in the hours before the sample, and what the previous result was. Two people can hand over the same number and leave with different advice, and neither has been given the wrong answer.

That is also why the bands on this page are drawn from a named guideline rather than from a rounded rule of thumb. A threshold is a decision point somebody argued for in print, not a law of nature, and knowing which document a line comes from is what lets you tell a meaningful result from a borderline one.
